Here’s something that’ll make you think twice before your next bike purchase — the geniuses (genii?) at Yale University have built a pretty rad spokeless bicycle, which was somehow inspired by the lack of “pictures of a real spokeless bicycle online.” Sure, strictly speaking it’s just a half-done product due to time (one semester) and budget restraints, but that rear wheel — driven by the pedals on its geared inner rim — alone should be enough to make you gasp. Practical hipsters might even be able to fit an electric motor or some sort of container inside the wheel, although we’re pretty content with the futuristic hollowness. Either way, the Yale grad who posted these photos is now available for hire, so pay him well and you can have it your way.

Truth be told, we weren’t sure what to make of this laser harp-looking contraption when we saw it across the room at the International Toy Fair. Eloquently dubbed the Beamz Interactive Music System, it has six laser beam “strings” that when struck by a hand or finger produces one of 100 instrumental sounds. Here’s the catch, though: the standing instrument must be connected to your PC via USB so that it can use its speakers. We think it’s sort of a bummer that you have to be attached to your computer to rock, but the PC software (we’re told Mac is on the way) lets you easily assign an instrument to the laser strings and also includes a variety of popular songs to jam along with. Though it’s been around since 2008, Beamz seems to have wised up and lowered the original $600 pricetag to $199. We realize we could continue to describe this digital instrument in length, but we’d rather you just watch us “play it” and royally embarrass ourselves after the break.

We’re still <strike>patiently</strike> waiting for Sipix’s color e-paper to hit the commercial realm, but ’til then, we suppose we’ll pretend to be content with the monochrome variety. Bookeen, which obviously has a hard row to hoe in the slam-packed e-reader market, recently announced what appeared to be a relatively ho hum reader in the Orizon. Today, however, we’ve learned that it’ll ship with a multitouch 6-inch Sipix display (800 x 600 resolution), and it’ll be available for purchase this May in the United States and UK. For those who’ve forgotten, it will arrive with WiFi, 1GB of internal memory, Bluetooth, an accelerometer and support for PDF / ePUB formats. Still, if the rumored $250 price point sticks, we sort of doubt those to-be Kindle customers will turn their back on an always-on connection, but hey — if the hackers step it up, this whole multitouch thing could really be enticing.

But, when it comes to letting the government snoop on our carb-loaded morsels, many of us are a little bit leery. Thus there is a growing debate about whether federal use of those breadcrumbs is legitimate, like the FBI identifying Texan bank robbers by co-locating phone calls made at various crime scenes. For its part the current administration indicates that you have no “reasonable expectation of privacy” when it comes to the location of your cellphone. This has members of the ACLU and EFF on-edge, but we’re guessing that this doesn’t concern any of you Latitude or Foursquare members in the slightest, yeah?

You’d have to be heartless to walk by Interbots’ Quasi and not crack a smile. Q, as we like to call him, isn’t an autonomous bot, but instead everything from his facial expressions to his speech are controlled wirelessly via a tablet PC. As you can see in the video after the break, his master can change his eye color and arm / hand movements with just a touch of the stylus. So, why did Quasi, who was born at Carnegie Mellon in 2006, make an appearance at the 2010 Toy Fair? Interbots is planning to bring an affordable child-friendly version of the $80,000 bot to market by the end of the year, and the reps on hand told us that it’ll even have similar puppeteering capabilities. Sounds like a potential nightmare for parents, but there’s something about this guy that makes us sure about his future as much-adored, bona fide family member.

If you’re both ready and set, then you’ll be pleased to know that Microsoft has major Windows Mobile goings-on to discuss tomorrow at 9AM ET (3PM here in Spain). What does that really mean? Well based on the torrent of circumstantial (and actual) evidence we’ve seen, it looks like the big M is set to deliver its most important piece of mobile news in years: Windows Mobile 7.
