No this isn’t the first Nokia-wielding fictional character or celeb that we’ve seen in this space, but the N96 recently spotted in the hands of our favorite psychopath has us wondering: would Dexter Morgan try N-Gage? And wouldn’t he prefer something with a QWERTY keyboard? Come to think of it, we always thought of him as a smartphone guy. Then again, times are tough, and as a new father he has to make… sacrifices.

Update: We originally identified this one as the N81. Thanks to all you raving Nokia fanatics who pointed out the error.

There are three things in this crazy world that scare the living daylights out of us: poor battery life, scratched screens, and seven-foot tall she-bots wielding Pres like concealed weapons. This, it seems, was the nightmarish scenario facing Madrid as it launched Palm’s first webOS-based phone this week.

Chris: “I’m being treated well, but please, it’s imperative that you buy this phone as expediently as possible.”
Richard Lai: “My other toy is the Pre.”
Ross: “It says if we don’t do exactly as it commands, the Spiders from Mars will return and destroy us all.”
Darren: “Geordi La Forge and I are like this.”
Josh T.: “So far they have treated me well, but I fear that could change at any moment. If you comply with their demand for 300 pairs of leather pants, they say I will be released unharmed.”
Thomas: “Sir, I assure you, this is exactly how they do it in America.”

Our usual rule is to ignore attention-seeking class-action lawsuits until they make it past the critical step of being certified by a judge, but we think it’s pretty wild that the Sidekick debacle has already resulted in two separate suits in two different states. That’s a turnaround time of just a few days, really — and now that Microsoft is saying it can restore most of the lost data, it’ll be interesting to see if these cases can push on past the early stages. Both the California and Washington state cases allege that T-Mobile misled customers into thinking their data was secure, but for some reason we’re particularly amused at the California case filed by a mother whose aspiring model and singer-songwriter daughter lost “photos and song lyrics” she’d entrusted to her Sidekick — honestly, what judge can’t relate to her situation?

Believe it or not, a device-controlled car isn’t exactly fresh. In fact, we’ve actually seen a PSP control a Civic before Barack Obama was even a glimmer in the media’s eye. That said, we’re always willing to give credit where it’s due, and the iDriver app just might be the most impressive use of Apple’s smartphone… well, ever. As the name implies, this here app is able to control a heavily wired vehicle seemingly with ease — the accelerometer handles the steering, and two soft buttons on the screen handle braking and acceleration. We’d bother explaining more, but we know you’ve already clicked past the break to see the whole thing demonstrated on video. Right?

The official line is still that T-Mobile customers affected by Sidekick amnesia will be given a months’ credit on their data plan, but that may not be the end of it (and considering the magnitude of the issue for affected folks, we’d certainly hope not). At this point, they’re leaving the door open to more by saying that they’re “considering additional measures” to help soothe the souls of those who lost contacts, notes, schedules, apps, and everything else, but exactly what those “measures” are remains to be seen. Free phones? Free service? A gift certificate to a day spa? The full (albeit brief) remarks can be found after the break.
